WASHING THE CLOTHES
Properly washing children’s garments is essential for ensuring that the clothes get deep down clean. Moreover, using the proper techniques allows the fabrics to stay stronger so that they last over time without wearing out. Choosing the right detergent, carefully reading the labels, and recognising delicate fabrics are just some of the fundamental rules for achieving good results when washing children’s clothing.
MAXIMUM CLEANLINESS
One of the first recommendations to follow when washing children’s clothing is to do their laundry separately from the laundry of other family members in order to be able to use specific disinfectants, if necessary, or to rinse the clothing twice to avoid detergent residue on the garments. In this regard, it is undoubtedly better to use a washing machine for the job than to wash the clothes by hand. When washing children’s clothing in the washing machine it is better to keep the load light and to avoid using too much fabric or water softeners.
READ THE LABEL
The first rule for washing any type of clothing for children or newborns is to read the label carefully. The textile care symbols make it easy to find out if the garments can be washed by hand or in a washing machine or the proper temperature to use. It is also important to read the labels when dealing with delicate fabrics that must be treated with special detergents. Silk and wool, for example, require special treatments to prevent them from getting matted.
COLOURED GARMENTS AND DELICATE FABRICS
When washing children’s clothing, give delicate, dark or coloured garments special attention. To prevent unpleasant surprises and keep coloured clothing looking bright and new, use detergents specifically designed for colours, found in any supermarket. The same holds true for more delicate fabrics like wool or silk, whether they are washed by hand or in a washing machine.
AFTER WASHING
Once the clothes are clean, store them in a wardobe specifically for the child. Keeping them away from adult clothing will prevent contact with other materials that could be dusty or contain detergent or fabric softener residue. Do not use mothballs, which could cause problems if they come into contact with the clothing. Line-dry the garments inside out and take them down as soon as they are dry to prevent dust build-up.
